Nothing lasts forever. Over the past several decades or centuries, all the previous powerful world leaders, great people, inventors, doctors, famous writers, musicians, the kings and their kingdoms and the lots, the great talents and remarkable contributions of each individual and the abundance of wealth of the wealthy following the passing of their time on this earth, all but gone, vanished and remained only a biography, a remembrance, a memory or an appreciation. Despites all the differences in race, color, class status, where you came from whichever, we are only passing travelers which marks the only similarity among people. No man can boast to say he can live in this world or to enjoy his wealth for as long as he likes. That's not even in our control or expectation.
There was once a rich man who possessed a great deal of properties. He lived in one of his luxurious mansions on the beautiful outskirts of the town. he had many servants and two bodyguards to protect him and his family from any harm imaginable.
But one night when he was about to sleep, he heard a noise above the roof of his mansion as if someone was walking. He quickly walked out of his door and asked , " who is there ? "
" Don't be noisy ! I lost my horse. I am looking for it right now ! " came the voice of a man. He just lost his horse on the roof of this huge mansion?
" Nonsense ! " the rich man shouted angrily. " you must be crazy and mad. How could a horse "go up" to the roof ? Now, please get down quick ! "
The rich man returned to his room but he was deep in thought. " Who is this fellow ? Is he really looking for his horse or he has other motives he wants to give me some clues ? " He was sleepless through the night. he wanted to locate this man.
The next day, a man in shabby shirt appeared at the door. He told the guard , " Let me in. I would like to stay in this hotel for a few days. "
" This is not a hotel. This is a private residence. " said the guard.
" I am very sure this is a hotel. Many travelers came to stay here and afterwards left. Nobody stayed here forever. Please let me in. I would like to see the person in charge. "
Somehow, the rich man was informed of this incident and the shabby man was summoned to him.
" What were you talking about ? What who is in charge ? This is my residence. I am the owner." said the angry rich man.
The shabby man said, " Is this your residence ? I think you are mistaken. I had been here before but it was someone else who was in charge at that time. He thought this was his residence and now, you said the same thing." He was shaking his head.
The rich man said, " Mind your words. The person whom you were talking about was my late father. "
The shabby man said, " I want to tell you, I will be back. I will see you won't be around but others will. It could be your son, other family or other people. They will say the same thing that "This is mine" ! Does the land or the house really have a real owner ? No! It doesn't. The people only come and go and I am not wrong to say it is a hotel. "
Something flashed in the mind of the rich man, he winked his eyes, exclaimed, " Now, I recalled, you are the crazy mad man looking for your lost horse in the roof. "
The shabby man said, " That's right. I am the crazy mad man and so are you. If you are looking for yourself in your wealth, you are looking for the horse on the roof and that's utterly absurd."
Just as where you now reside, how many former owners had had stayed there and thought that belonged to them permanently but they were no longer around yet the land was still there. The dispute they once had over the land and the people involved were no longer there but the land had been transferred again and again yet no one could take it away when they died.
The glorious light of the Forbidden City goes on and on, brightening the earth for another generation and another generation!

Top-level comments on this article: (3 total)You tell great stories, Hilda. I love this one, where does it come from? It's true, nothing belongs to us really - or our ownership doesn't last very long...Thanks for your feedback. How true it can be . We hold nothing back when we go, not even a single cent. I always think about such thing and agree and I like to write about it.
Very good story Hilda, thanks for sharing. And thanks David for your support. I appreciate it !
Great story Hilda. We are born with nothing and we leave with nothing. It's the dash on our headstone that tells our whole story of how we lived our lives. I'm sure yours will represent a person of character filled with wisdom and love. That is a great compliment from you Linda. No man can bring any material thing away when he "goes home" We go bare handed.
